Applying for External Grants at Nova Scotia Health

News and Updates RSS

Grants and research funding are essential parts of conducting research. Many NSH research projects are supported or funded by external agencies, including government and non-profit foundations. These organizations offer funding programs that award research grants through peer-reviewed competitions, supporting a range of research efforts from individual project grants to large scale, multidisciplinary, inter-institutional team grants.

Refer to the weblink on the right side of the page for a full listing of upcoming grant opportunities open to NSH researchers and select Scientific Affiliates.

Common external research grant funders:

Internal Review and Deadlines

As per institutional policy, all funding applications to be administered by NSH researchers must be submitted to the NSH Research Grants team for review prior to the sponsor’s deadline. This includes but is not limited to electronic submissions to Research Nova Scotia and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

The mandatory internal deadline for grant review is one (1) – two (2) weeks prior to the sponsor’s grant deadline, depending on the sponsor and program complexity.

  • For more information on relevant internal deadlines or the submission process for a specific competition, reach out to the Research Grants team to learn more.

For those projects which may impact NSH Research Operations, Data and Analytics, IMIT, or have IP considerations, additional teams across NSH may be brought in as part of the grant review process.

Should an institutional signature (executive authority) be needed on the grant application prior to submission, the NSH Research Grants can assist with securing this for applicants as part of the review.

Assistance with Research Proposals

Depending on availability and priorities, the NSH Research Development team may be available to assist in reviewing draft proposals to ensure they are competitive, budgetarily appropriate, and aligned with a sponsor’s funding interests. Please reach out to researchdevelopment@nshealth.ca to learn more.

  • Research Development houses a repository of successful past grants to common competitions which may be available to share with prospective applicants.

The Research Methods Unit (RMU) is equipped with substantial methodological support, including biostatisticians, database specialists, informatics specialists, qualitative methodologists, and health economists. Learn more here: Research Methods Unit | Nova Scotia Health Innovation Hub

If assistance on a grant is needed, investigators are encouraged to contact Research Development and/or RMU early in the grant drafting process.
