Dr. Jamileh Yousefi is an Assistant Professor in the Shannon School of Business at Cape Breton University, Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University and an Affiliate Scientist with Nova Scotia Health  

Can you tell us a little bit about your field of research?  

I received my Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Guelph (2018) and a MSc in Computer Science from Concordia University. My research interests span the areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, with a specific focus on medical data and healthcare systems. Currently, I am involved with research funded by Research Nova Scotia to conduct a study with a focus on using explainable artificial intelligence to explore geographical disparities in cancer incidence and mortality rates in Canada.  

What led you to this field/inspired you to do this work? 

In 2000, I immigrated to Canada as a software engineer. After a year working as a software test engineer, I realized the importance of expanding my knowledge at a top-tier university. This led me to pursue a master's degree at Concordia University and conduct research in the field of AI. My passion for AI research continued at the University of Guelph, where I further broadened my horizons. My doctoral thesis focused on using artificial intelligence models to develop a clinical decision support system to aid physicians in diagnosing neuromuscular disorders. This experience sparked my passion for applying artificial intelligence in the medical field and playing a role in enhancing people's health. 

How does your research translate into healthcare solutions for the patient/public? 

I believe my current research will shed light on the factors contributing to geographical disparity in cancer rates in Canada. By identifying potential links, we can provide insights to shape public health policies, preventive measures, and increase awareness. 

What is the biggest challenge/opportunity in your field of research? 

The main challenge in my field centers on acquiring data for building artificial intelligence models. Particularly, gaining access to healthcare data proves to be exceedingly time consuming and requires navigating through various protocols, thus increasing the complexity of the process. Another significant challenge pertains to ethical artificial intelligence practices and preserving data privacy. 

Why is research and participation in research important? 

Research and participation in research are crucial for advancing knowledge and driving progress, fostering innovation and addressing the complex challenges facing society. It helps empower us to explore new frontiers, expand knowledge boundaries and create positive change in the world. 

What does the ideal future in your field of research look like to you?  

I envision the ideal future at the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare, characterized by several key aspirations, such as personalized healthcare, predictive medicine, ethical artificial intelligence practices, and seamless integration of artificial intelligence into healthcare systems. 

In my perspective, future advancements in artificial intelligence technologies will enable personalized healthcare approaches tailored to individual patients' needs, preferences, and genetic profiles, resulting in more accurate diagnoses, effective treatment plans and improved patient outcomes. Moreover, artificial intelligence driven predictive models will enable proactive interventions and preventive measures. Furthermore, the implementation of robust ethical frameworks ensures fairness, transparency, accountability and privacy protection in artificial intelligence driven healthcare solutions. 

I see the ideal future at the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare  as patient-centered, data-driven, ethically sound and globally connected healthcare ecosystem. This vision promises to enhance health outcomes and foster the well-being of individuals and communities globally.
