Katrina Carver

Medventions fellow Katrina Carver

Katrina Carver is an experienced AI in medicine researcher and aspiring medtech innovator. Born and raised in Halifax, she has recently completed her Master of Science in Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto, and is dedicated to leveraging scientific, data-driven expertise to translate clinical needs in gynaecology-oncology into patient-centered solutions.

Her work is driven by both her personal purpose and career aspirations: to serve patients’ multifaceted needs through the creation and application of digital-health-based innovations.

Adaptability and continuous learning are central to Katrina’s approach. During an Honours degree in Physics, she successfully transitioned into new research areas, applying data science and AI to interdisciplinary projects across fields, including radiomic oncology and computational neuroscience, despite no prior formal training in these fields.

Katrina is deeply motivated to bridge the gap between bench and bedside, combining science and technology with compassion, professionalism and a strong ethical framework.

Recognizing that healthcare innovation requires strong business and commercialization skills to bring technologies from concept to clinical impact, she is eager to continue to develop these skills through the Medventions Atlantic program. Ultimately, she hopes to achieve her goal of improving healthcare in Nova Scotia by becoming an innovative and impactful digital health industry leader.

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time outdoors (particularly near or in the ocean), training at the gym, creating crochet projects and cuddling up with her dog.

Faduma Ahmed

Medventions fellow Faduma Ahmed

Faduma Ahmed graduated with a Bachelor of Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 2023 and is currently completing a post-degree program in Disability Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University. With a strong technical background in hardware prototyping, embedded systems, and web development, she brings both engineering expertise and a human-centered perspective to innovation. She is deeply motivated to apply technical, research, and advocacy experience to improving accessibility and healthcare outcomes.

Faduma has gained extensive industry experience at Apple, Siemens Healthcare, Varian Medical Systems, Ford Motor Company, Huawei Technologies, and Qualcomm.

She collaborated with healthcare professionals at the Hospital for SickKids, acting as co-founder to a support network for teens and young adults with Brachial Plexus Injury, addressing gaps in the transition from pediatric to adult care.  She also serves as youth lead for Canada’s first-ever National Black Disability Coalition, which has over 200 members.

She is excited to bring a combination of industry, research, and advocacy experience to the Medventions Atlantic program, and continue to build valuable skills.

In her spare time, Faduma enjoys writing poetry, running and making music.

Jared Brierbrier

Medventions fellow Jared Brierbrier

Jared Bierbrier earned an undergraduate degree in Integrated Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences at McMaster University, specializing in Health, Engineering Science and Entrepreneurship. This interdisciplinary training provided a strong foundation in applying engineering principles to address medical needs. A highlight of Jared’s studies was the Innovators in Scrubs course, where he shadowed surgeries across multiple specialties to identify unmet clinical needs. Working within a multidisciplinary team, Jared helped address inefficiencies surgeons faced when switching between monopolar and bipolar electrocautery, contributing to the development of a 3D-printed prototype that was well received by clinical mentors.

Driven by a passion for both medicine and innovation, Jared is motivated to bridge clinical care and medical technology and he aspires to become a physician who improves patient outcomes while advancing healthcare delivery through innovative solutions, particularly in medical device development and commercialization.

Beyond academics, Jared’s experience as an Emergency Medical Responder have strengthened essential skills in communication, teamwork and decision-making under pressure. He is eager to use both his educational and professional experience to both contribute to and learn from the Medventions Atlantic program.

In his spare time, Jared enjoys spending time with friends and family, staying active through regular workouts and experimenting in the kitchen with new recipes.
